BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts is launching its first publication, marking a significant moment in its ten years of activity.
BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts. The Crossing is Possible marks the conclusion of a ten-year cycle and reflects on multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary practices. With a preface by Tiago Rodrigues, the book brings together commissioned texts by Cláudia Madeira, Claudia Galhós, Raquel Lima, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Gaya de Medeiros, Odete, Delfim Sardo, and Sara Franqueira; a collaborative interview; documentation of creative processes and artist interviews; and a series of previously unpublished visual works commissioned from Gus Van Sant, Agnieszka Polska, Romeo Castellucci, and Tânia Carvalho.
The event took place in the Jardim de Inverno of São Luiz Municipal Theatre, featuring a talk conducted by BoCA’s executive director, Suzanne Marivoet, on the book’s concepts and themes, with the participation of BoCA’s founder and curator John Romão, journalist and writer Cláudia Galhós, curator Delfim Sardo, and set designer/researcher Sara Franqueira.
“BoCA’s mission is to draw artists into a satellite experience—a parenthesis in their path, an exception to the rule. (…) Here lie both the causes and indispensable consequences of BoCA’s artistic program: deviation invites experimentation.”
— Tiago Rodrigues
“I hoped BoCA would not be just another event, but a sustained movement fostering critical reflection and interaction across institutions, artistic fields, geographies, and audiences. Its strength, I knew, would stem from a plural, collaborative, and synergic identity—one that transcends artistic, cultural, and social boundaries.”
— John Romão
