“Alcindo Monteiro” by Gabriel Chaile
Freirianas Guerreiras
Ficar no Papel
At the invitation of the BoCA Bienal, Gabriel Chaile created the sculpture-oven “Alcindo Monteiro”, inaugurated in 2023 in Praça do Carvão, at the MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, in Lisbon, as a tribute to Alcindo Monteiro, a young Portuguese, born in Cape Verde, brutally murdered in 1995, in a crime that exposed, and continues to expose, the structural racism that finds space and legitimization in the country.
On July 11 and 13, 2025, at 6pm, the Convento de Jesus in Setúbal will host musical and performance activations around the installation, creating spaces for reflection and dialog about discrimination and racism.

Freirianas Guerreiras
The Freirianas Guerreiras batuque group, made up mostly of women, has the mission of preserving and promoting batuque, a musical expression with African roots and an essential part of Cape Verdean identity. The name is a tribute to the strength and resistance of the women who keep these traditions alive, with a special focus on female empowerment and the appreciation of Afro-descendant cultures. The lyrics deal with themes such as resistance, identity and the struggle of women in Cape Verdean society. Since its creation, the group has stood out for its authentic and energetic performances in Cape Verde and beyond, taking part in various music and cultural festivals. At the same time, it develops educational initiatives, such as workshops and lectures on the importance of batuque. He was awarded in the category of Best Traditional Music at the Cabo Verde Music Awards, with the song “Si bu dam”, in partnership with the artist Lejemea.
Ficar no Papel
Ficar No Papel is a dance creation project aimed at young teenagers living or studying in the Bela Vista neighborhood in Setúbal. It starts from the idea of the body as a depository of individual and collective experiences, forged by them: a place of memories that can be accessed and revisited. With this group of teenagers, we worked on pressing issues through the body and movement. “PANGEIA or the geography of belonging” is the result of the second edition of this project. Based on ideas such as safe place, identity, belonging, territory and culture, we looked at each participant and their internal geography, their own places and moments of connection with their surroundings and others. A complex and variable construction of who and where we feel we belong. How do we construct our place in the world?
A Monstro Colectivo project with artistic direction by Carlota Oliveira & Inês Oliveira.
Terra Cobre
“Terra Cobre” is a new creation commissioned for the BoCA Biennial 2023, premiering at the Estufa Fria in Lisbon. In this collaboration, musician and sculptor João Pais Filipe and choreographer and dancer Marco da Silva Ferreira explore concepts of identity, culture and society, reinterpreting ancestral cultural heritages and challenging established conventions. They use the materials of the rattles to create a sculptural, sound and physical composition, portraying a landscape full of memories, where shepherds and beasts meet.
Terra Cobre will be presented in Setúbal, at A Gráfica - Centro de Criação Artística, on July 13, Sunday, at 9:30 p.m., with free admission, upon prior reservation by email to maps@mun-setubal.pt
