Kiluanji Kia Henda

Mini-Docs Visual Arts, Theatre

The mini-documentary “Coral dos Corpos Sem Norte” (Choir of Homeless Bodies) follows Kiluanji Kia Henda’s new creation, the Angolan artist’s largest project presented in Portugal. The work unfolds in a theater performance and a large-scale installation, activated by performative moments. Both proposals were presented in the context of the 5th edition of the BoCA Biennial of Contemporary Arts.

In this documentary, Kiluanji Kia Henda presents a two-part project that unfolds between the stage and public space, combining performance and installation to create an exercise in presence and displacement.
Through the images, we hear the artist explain the haunting nature of migration and how it relates to the symbolism of pemba/mbindi, a traditional Angolan spell that keeps those who leave connected to their place of origin, transforming the act of traveling into a cycle with no beginning and no end.
From the sound to the choirs and the presence of the performers, the audience is placed at the center of a sensory and critical experience, reflecting on the place of the individual in the political and affective geographies of the contemporary world.

By following this process, the documentary reveals how “Coral dos Corpos Sem Norte” transforms migration into a circular metaphor, where leaving and returning cease to be opposites and become continuous movements. Based on the symbolism of “pemba/mbindi,” Kiluanji Kia Henda constructs a reflection on the invisible bonds that connect bodies, territories, and memories. Between narrative, sound, and performative presence, the project invites the audience to think of displacement not only as a geographical crossing, but as an existential condition that traverses the political and affective geographies of the contemporary world.
