When I make an environment called Voglio vedere le mie montagne, I want to affirm an inner archetype of the idea of the mountain: the mountains of the self. - Joseph Beuys, 1979
In the year that marks the centenary of the birth of Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), BoCA has created “The Defense of Nature”, a collaborative artistic project that promotes new artistic creations in the natural space.
Curated by Delfim Sardo and Sílvia Gomes, “I want to see my mountains” features artists Sara Bichão, Diana Policarpo, Dayana Lucas, Gustavo Sumpta, Gustavo Ciríaco, Musa paradisiaca and Berru.
The premise proposes that the invited artists look at Beuys’ legacy, while at the same time observing their own mountains, or their inner selves.
Drawing on a variety of artistic genres and backgrounds, ranging from the visual arts to the performing arts, each artist is asked to conceive an unprecedented intervention to take place by the sea, the river or in a green space, nurturing affinities between art and nature.
There are 7 unique sessions, over the 7 weekends of the biennial, distributed between Lisbon, Almada and Faro.

“0” is an action in three tenses: (1) bank; (2) river; (3) shore. It consists of the transportation of an oval block of ice, which crosses the River Tagus by sea from the Lisbon bank to the Almada bank. Inside, a sculpture is suspended until the phenomenon of melting occurs.
This ambitious project links the two cities by rowing and can be followed from the starting point (Praia dos Momores) or the arrival point (Praia do Porto Brandão) and, at the same time, via live streaming on BoCA’s Instagram.
