Wolfgang Tillmans
Before I Knew It

12 April

Lisboa – Lux / Frágil Biennial 2019 Music

Wolfgang Tillmans is one of the most influential artists of our time. Internationally renowned, he won the Turner Prize in 2000. He is a master of the image who captures the world and challenges the viewer to create unexpected connections, encompassing a vast reality that ranges from rave culture to pop rock music, causes related to gender rights and freedoms, sexual orientation, symbols of censorship, anti-war marches, Black Lives Matter demonstrations, and opposition to Brexit (in which he became personally involved and became one of its spokespeople).

In Tillmans’ universe there is music, dance, dilated pupils, free sex, political statements, and also abstract images. In 2016 he had an exhibition at Serralves (“Wolfgang Tillmans: On the Threshold of Visibility”) and in 2021 he will have a retrospective exhibition of his work at MoMA in New York. Before that, in this second edition of BoCA, he presents the darker side of his art: Tillmans also makes electronic music (he released his first synth-pop album when he was still a teenager, living in West Germany, and his second in 2016). It is this more hidden side of the artist that he will share in an unprecedented event in Portugal, in an early evening that combines pre-recorded and live music, with CDJs and a microphone.
