Une vague joyeuse/Uma onda feliz

3 September – 17 October

Faro – Fábrica da Cerveja Biennial 2021 Installation

“Une vague joyeuse” is a project by Luís Lázaro Matos with a title that recalls the last scene of the film “Testament of Orpheus” (1960) by Jean Cocteau, in which a convertible car drives down a winding road while the passengers scream in joy, indifferent to the two policemen parked by the curb.

With an international trajectory between the visual arts and music, Luís Lázaro Matos has become interested in the idea of the ‘wave’ over the last few years. In “Une vague joyeuse”, the artist begins with the entropic nature of this element which is then weaved into an impression of the pandemic. The word ‘wave’ has been repeatedly used to identify the successive surges of the Covid virus, and people’s life plans that have been suspended according to the accentuation of Gaussian curves.

From this idea, the artist creates a visual and sculptural and pictorial installation that functions as a form of “wishful thinking”: a wave of caduceus – the symbol of health transformed into a wave of festive serpentines. Possibly the best way to end a film.
