Biennial 2019 – Ecotemporaries

Mathilde Monnier
Workshop with Mathilde Monnier

18 – 30 September

Lisboa – Estúdios Victor Córdon - CNB & TNSC Biennial 2019 Workshop, summer school

“Deviation from a repertoire”

During this workshop, it will be discussed issues surrounding the transmission of a play from Mathilde Monnier’s repertoire. We will go through different writing processes related to her repertoire, which are also an opportunity to think about the notion of reinterpretation. In fact, it will not consist in reproducing an identical writing, but in interrogating through practices, exercises and scenic proposals, the notions of re-appropriations.
This workshop will also be an opportunity to question the need to go through contemporary repertoires to better understand what is represented in time and how writing can cross (or not) an era.

Biography

Mathilde Monnier has a prominent place in the panorama of French and international contemporary dance. In each creation she challenges expectations, in a constant renewal of her work. Her appointment to the director of the Montpellier Laguedoc-Roussillon Choreographic Center in 1994 marked the beginning of a series of collaborations with personalities from diverse artistic fields (Jean-Luc Nancy, Katerine, Christine Angot, La Ribot, Heiner Goebbels…). She has created more than 40 choreographic pieces performed on major international stages, from the Avignon Festival to the Paris theatres, through New York, Vienna, Berlin, London, among others. She received several awards for her work, such as the prize of the French Ministry of Culture (Grand Prix SACD). From 2014-2018 she was director of the Center National de la Dance in Pantin, Paris, one of the largest centers of contemporary dance in Europe. In Portugal she has been a frequent presence at Culturgest or Porto Municipal Theater. She is currently rehearsing a new creation with La Ribot and Tiago Rodrigues, “Please Please Please”.
