GONÇALO M. TAVARES & OS ESPACIALISTAS

Writer Gonçalo M. Tavares and The Spacialists, collective of architects, present a conference-performance entitled “Animals and Money”. Together and for the first time on stage, the artists develop ways of feeling above average, based on texts, images, gestures, objects and spaces under permanent construction, with the audience present. This is BoCA's first presence on the island of Funchal, Madeira.

GRADA KILOMBA

Grada Kilomba's first large-scale installation travels to Margarida Xirgu Square, in front of Teatro Lliure, in Barcelona. Consisting of 140 burnt wood blocks, it invites the audience to enter a garden of memory, in which poems rest on burnt wood blocks, recalling forgotten stories and identities. What stories are told? Where are they counted? How are they counted? And told by whom? These are questions that arise when entering this installation.

Film director Gus Van Sant ventures into his first creation for the stage, a musical theater show inspired by Andy Warhol and his overwhelming talent for elevating images into icons, all while achieving worldwide celebrity status as persona and artist.

The performance "200 Questions to Each" is the public presentation, closing experience and materialisation of Mutantes - between theatre and museum, BoCA's transdisciplinary artistic training and creation project for young people, to take place on June 18, at 3 pm at 5 pm, at the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II.

Consisting of 140 burnt wood blocks, it invites the audience to enter a garden of memory, in which poems rest on burnt wood blocks, recalling forgotten stories and identities. What stories are told? Where are they counted? How are they counted? And told by whom? These are questions that arise when entering this installation.

JONAS & LANDER

"Coin Operated" came from an invitation by BoCA to Jonas & Lander, to create a museum piece. The scenic device features two coin-operated motor horses, with both performers seated on it. For something to happen, the audience has to insert a coin into the horses. The performance addresses the economic and power relationship, the conquest of territory, slavery, the mounting of the more powerful social classes to the less fortunate.

A BoCA production touring now to our partner Kampnagel, in Hamburg.

Jonathan Uliel Saldanha

On the border between sound and visual arts, composer and director Jonathan Uliel Saldanha investigates areas of intersection between these artistic territories, exploring tensions between the synthetic and the landscape. He runs a two-day music and sound arts workshop at CCB.

Pilar Albarracín

A multidisciplinary artist, Pilar Albarracín is one of the most recognised contemporary Spanish artists. Her work questions, through parody or irony, artistic, religious and cultural traditions, especially that of the identity of women in Andalusian culture. She runs a 2-day performing arts and visual arts workshop at MAAT.

TIAGO CADET

“Brasa” by Tiago Cadete continues one of his theatrical research lines, that of questioning and critically looking at the historical relationship between Portugal and Brazil, accompanied by a cast of creators-performers of different origins. The piece is a commission and co-production of BoCA 2021.

MARIANA TENGNER BARROS, GUSTAVO CIRÍACO, PEDRO RAMOS

"Inside the forest, body and imagination" is the first artistic action to take place in the Monsanto Forest, where BoCA started a tree planting process. With a tripartite format, this performing arts workshop brings together three artists with a transdisciplinary practice, between dance, performance and the visual arts: Mariana Tengner Barros, Gustavo Ciríaco and Pedro Ramos.

EL CONDE DE TORREFIEL

Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert are the directors of the Spanish theatre collective El Conde de Torrefiel, a company that has been touring the most important European festivals and theatres in recent years. They lead a 5-day theatre and performing arts workshop at Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

ORLAN

She shocked the world in the 1990s when he performed “The Reincarnation of Santa ORLAN”, a series of nine plastic surgeries that were broadcast via satellite to several museums and art galleries in Europe. ORLAN is one of the most important French artists, author of the manifesto “Carnal Art”. She runs a three-day workshop for the first time in Portugal.

At the invitation of BoCA, the French artist ORLAN presents, at 7 pm in the Sala dos Geradores, in the Central Tejo building, the public conversation “THIS IS MY BODY, THIS IS MY SOFTWARE”, with free entry. The talk takes place in connection with her first workshop in Portugal, which she runs at BoCA Summer School, between September 30th and October 2nd.

MARLENE MONTEIRO FREITAS

Installation commissioned by BoCA in 2019, CATTIVO is a large-scale installation made up of hundreds of music stands designed by Cape Verdean choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas. Through the use of a sensorial type of stage mechanism, these objects, usually at the service of the musician and the score, become subjects with their own feelings and desires. CATTIVO explores the borders of the animal, plant and imaginary worlds.
