Romeo Castellucci (1960, Cesena)

Romeo Castellucci (Cesena, 1960) is a director and visual artist. With Claudia Castellucci and Chiara Guidi, he directs Societas Raffaello Sanzio, a company that has received numerous international prizes and published several books, considered to be the most internationally recognised Italian company. Castelucci developed a genre of “Theatre of Images,” incorporating technology and machinery, dense soundscapes, and fragmented narratives into his performances.

In 2008, he was associate artist of Festival d’Avignon, where he premiered a trilogy inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy that toured internationally. Le Monde called it “the best performance and one of the most influential arts event of 2000-2010.”

For the Schaubühne in Berlin he created Hyperion and Oedipus. His work has been co-produced and presented at Festival d’Avignon, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Art Basel, Kunsten Festival des Arts, and at the Ruhr Triennial, among others. In 2012 he was awarded a Golden Lion at the Venice Theatre Biennial.
